The Story so Far !

After September 17th 1998, Black Thursday in Acorn parlance, It became unclear whether the Acorn desktop computer had any future. with Acorn itself mo longer supporting the development of new hardware, and an operating system tied seemingly irrevocably to custom hardware, it was begining to look like Amiga all over again, (But with a far smaller user base).

Some people in the usenet newsgroups started to talk about Linux as a viable alternative, even about building an API layer on top to allow the Acorn GUI and applications to piggy back on it.

I resolved to have a look for myself, and set myself the following goals.

Terms of Reference for the project

I kept a diary diary of the 5 weeks I played with it. I never achieved a stable desktop environment which was actually useful.
I did get to the point where I could browse the web and use Email.
I installed Wordperfect and found it to have all the things I didn't like about MS WORD, without actually having a useful degree of MS WORD compatability. I deleted that and released 80 Megabytes of diskspace. (Yes !!! 80 Meg).

I then tried to install Star Office with zero success, eventually blowing my Linux installation away.
Here is the diary page. There are 2 entries. One for the first attempt last year. A second entry will contain my new attempts on an IBM P90 I have. The K6 350 which I was using before now has a banshee graphics card and is finding some use as a games platform for Half Life and Unreal.

I created a bullet point repeatable guide for installation as far as I got. It served me well on the occasions when I reinstalled, sometimes odd things happened though. It seems that like MS Windows, no two installations are ever exactly the same.

There were times when I was simply confused as to what was meant. Eventually, I created a glossary of terms and a list of Linux commands and keystrokes , to help me remember what I had already learned.

As Mentioned in the Terms of Reference, I hope to be able to carry out some comparisons and report on first impressions.

Links which I have found invaluable.
